Procedures
- The Curriculum Committee is the committee for interdepartmental coordination and conflict resolution on curricular matters. It reviews curricular programs and initiatives that cut across units in the School, or which arise between other Bloomington Campus schools and the Luddy School of Informatics, Computing, and Engineering. The Committee also performs reviews of curriculum matters brought to their attention by individual faculty, committees, or units. The substance of Curriculum Committee reviews should be reported back, as appropriate to the requester and to the Committee's work.
- The Curriculum Committee will work with administrators to implement a School-level remonstrance process similar to the University-level remonstrance system. Prior to being scheduled and offered to students, new courses must be included on a periodic School-level remonstrance list. The School-level remonstrance system will provide a transparent and uniform mechanism for notifying all units and faculty in the School of new course offerings. The remonstrance process will allow units and individual faculty to identify courses that may cause unnecessary competition or duplication and to identify opportunities for collaboration and cooperation (such as cross-listing and joint-listing of courses).
- Curriculum proposals that require campus-level review must be submitted to the Committee with sufficient lead time as information items and with sufficient detail so that the Committee can review the proposals to see if there are program or curricular issues involving other units in the School or the Bloomington Campus that should be handled before taking the proposal to the Bloomington campus. In this capacity, the Committee will review proposals and make recommendations.
- The Committee will also be available upon the request of people who have questions about any curriculum matter. School and Campus faculty may also request that the curriculum committee undertake a particular type of review, and the committee should take such requests into consideration in determining the level of attention they give to a particular curriculum matter.
- While budgetary affairs are not the primary concern of this Committee, the
Committee may discuss and provide recommendations on budgetary matters
insofar as they impact the School’s curricular matters and educational mission. - As needed, the Committee will work with the corresponding committees in the College of Arts and Sciences and others Schools on Campus to coordinate curricular matters that involve Luddy and the College or other Bloomington Schools.
- The Committee will aim to facilitate solutions to curricular issues by
consulting with the relevant faculty and administrators. In cases where the committee cannot facilitate a solution through consultation and negotiation, the Committee itself may vote to decide the issue or refer the issue to the Luddy Bloomington campus faculty for vote. In the latter case, the Committee may engage the Faculty Policy Committee in this process.
Membership
The Curriculum Committee will include two full time faculty elected representatives per unit on the Bloomington campus. Members are elected according to the unit bylaws in a secret ballot. Members serve staggered three-year terms, commencing on July 1 of each year. When a vacancy occurs, the appropriate unit will elect a replacement for the remainder of the term. Approximately one third of the committee is elected at the end of each academic year. The updated Curriculum Committee, when it first convenes, selects its own Chair, from within its ranks. The Associate Dean for Academic Programs is an ex-officio non-voting member of the committee, unless elected as a faculty member by their unit, in which case he serves as a voting member. The committee can invite non-voting members for its discussions as appropriate.
