Selection of the Chair
All of the CS faculty vote to make a recommendation to the Dean.

All of these directors and committee chairs are appointed by the Chair.
General policies
All votes regarding personnel issues are conducted by secret ballot.
Voting rights with regard to CS Department policies are limited to those whose tenure home or primary department is in CS, including 0% FTE.
Promotion and tenure policies
Voting rights with regard to P&T are limited to those whose tenure home or primary department is in CS, including 0% FTE.
The following table describes which faculty are eligible to vote on which kinds of promotion and tenure cases.

The Chair assigns a faculty mentor to new Assistant Professors.
A 3rd year review is conducted for Assistant Professors. The process is similar to tenure review. The Chair assigns the committee.
For all promotions, the chair assigns a committee to help the candidate prepare the dossier, give them feedback, present the case to the faculty, and write the departmental report. At least one committee member is in the CS department but other committee members may be from other departments as appropriate given the area of specialization of the candidate.
Hiring and transfer policies
Voting rights with regard to hiring is limited to those whose tenure home or primary department is in CS, including 0% FTE.
The Chair appoints a faculty search committee.
All faculty vote on new hires and on transfers of faculty (from other departments within IU) into the CS Department.
School committee
See the School bylaws regarding these committees. Here we further specify that all faculty in the CS Department vote to elect two members each to the Policy and P&T committees.
- Policy committee: CS faculty elects two members.
- P&T committee: CS faculty elects two tenured members–at least 1 full professor.
- Curriculum committee: two members appointed by the Chair.

Colloquium committee
This committee consists of 2 faculty who serve a 2 year rolling term. This committee is appointed by the Chair.
Faculty affairs committee
This committee consists of 2 tenured CS faculty who serve 2-year rolling terms, 1 Assistant Professor who serves a 1-year term, and 1 NTT faculty who serves a 1-year term.
All faculty vote to select the tenured faculty, Assistant Professors vote on the Assistant Professor, and NTT vote on the NTT faculty.
Undergraduate education
The committee includes faculty who are interested in serving and by appointment by the Chair. The committee automatically includes the non-majors committee members.
CS non-majors curriculum
The committee includes faculty who are interested in serving and by appointment by the Chair.
Graduate education
The committee includes faculty who are interested in serving and by appointment by the Chair.
CS admissions & awards
The committee includes faculty who are interested in serving and by appointment by the Chair.
Curriculum decision making
Teaching faculty with at least 30% FTE in the CS Department vote on matters of curriculum. Research Scientists do not vote on matters of curriculum.
